Broadway’s Business Heritage

As one of the oldest thoroughfares in the country, U.S. Highway One has long been home to businesses seeking to gain the attention of travelers and commuters. In West Palm Beach, it traverses the eastern portion of our city and is the original northern gateway to the city. From the scenic skybridge at the Port of Palm Beach directly into the heart of the downtown business district, the Broadway Corridor has a rich history as a home to successful businesses. The longevity of businesses on Broadway is a testament to this well traveled roadway.

Northwood Funeral home has been located here for 53 years, Nozzle Nolen for 51 years and KFC for 40 years. Johnson Flooring and National City Bank (formerly Fidelity Bank & Trust) have been doing business at their locations for the last 35 years. There are currently a variety of businesses on Broadway including apartments, restaurants, assisted living facilities, automotive shops, convenience stores, drug stores, green grocers and a supermarket, to name a few.

Extending from 59th Street south to Northwood Road, the corridor hosts over 35,000 daily commuters. There are over 5,400 households within a half-mile with values ranging from moderate to over $3 million. More than 500 of these are waterfront condominiums. Nationally registered historic districts straddle the corridor and are enjoying a renaissance as home owners rediscover the benefits of living closer to both the downtown area and beaches. Residents comprise a diverse group and create a desirable audience for the goods and services of quality businesses in the business district.

Originally founded in 1894 by Henry Flagler, West Palm Beach was created to house servants working at hotels on nearby Palm Beach. Many of the city’s historic structures were created in the 1920 during a business and real estate boom cycle. These historic structures give West Palm Beach an architectural elegance and contribute to the unique diversity of the community’s atmosphere. The city has also been credited with being one of the best places to live and work.

Today, West Palm Beach has a population exceeding 89,000. It is within the northernmost boundary of the South Florida Mega Region, which has a population of over 5.4 million, making it the sixth largest metropolitan area in the United States. West Palm Beach is only 70 miles north of Miami and 46 miles north of Fort Lauderdale, giving businesses easy access to these markets as well as three major ports and three international airports.
